Friendly PingMicro-Meditations

Without a screen

Most mindfulness apps want you to open them. This one is built so that you rarely have to — at best, the sound is enough.

The claim

An app that wants to settle you by pulling you to a screen works against itself. So almost every decision in Friendly Ping was weighed by how much screen time it costs — and most went in favour of less.

This is the most effective way to use this app and bring your intention into daily life.

How you can check that

  • The full text is in the notification

Not a hint that something is waiting, but the practice itself. You read it on the lock screen, do it — and put the phone away without ever unlocking it.

  • The fixed ping eventually bypasses the screen entirely

One text, permanently bound to one sound. After a few weeks the sound alone brings the practice back. The app itself calls this the most effective way to use it — and it is also the way you need it least.

  • The badge always shows one

Never a growing number. One ping is waiting — that is all it says, however many there were. A counter would be a small debt growing by the day.

  • There is nothing you could fall behind on

No account, no feed, no streak, no statistics, no progress bar. None of that is missing out of laziness — all of it exists to pull you back.

  • The sound is deliberately not an alarm

Singing bowls and bells rather than an alarm clock. An alarm demands a response. A sound invites a pause — and can be missed without anything happening.

  • Missed pings wait without nagging

If you can’t right now, you can’t. The ping is then there in the app if you want it — and if not, that is fine too.

An honest objection

This page is itself screen time. You are reading it on the very device the app wants to take you away from. That cannot be resolved, only named: a website is where you explain what an app does. After that it is not needed — and inside the app you will find no text of this length.

What the app does, and what it doesn’t

Bring mindfulness into the middle of your life. Just try it.
